The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) has issued a stark warning about the deteriorating food security situation in Yemen, projecting that over 18 million people may face hunger by February 2026. This looming crisis underscores one of the world’s most severe humanitarian emergencies.
During a UN Security Council briefing, Ramesh Rajasingham, Director of OCHA’s Coordination Division, emphasized that ” Starvation is preventable ” and highlighted the tireless efforts of humanitarian organizations ”operating on the ground despite limited resources and operational challenges, , with the singular goal of reaching those most at risk before it is too late.
He pointed out humanitarian partners have prioritized the food response to 8.8 million of the most at-risk people – all in emergency or catastrophic situations. It will come as no surprise that such efforts require support – both political and financial.
He added، Humanitarian Fund has allocated $20 million, urging donors to increase funding for emergency food and nutrition assistance.
Rajasingham also underscored the critical role local partners can play in making a significant difference in the lives of millions, provided they receive the necessary support.
