European warning of the risk of imminent famine in Yemen

The European Commission for Humanitarian Aid warned of a serious deterioration in the food situation in Yemen, noting that the country faces disturbing levels of food insecurity, with thousands of population on the brink of famine.

According to a statement issued by the Commission, approximately 41,000 people in four directorates in the governorates of Imran, Hodeidah, and Hajjah are at risk of starvation from September 2025, which threatens an imminent humanitarian catastrophe, for the first time since 2022.

The statement added that the ability of local communities to withstand has declined significantly, as humanitarian aid and social ties are no longer sufficient to contain the crisis, despite their role in alleviating their severity during the past years.

The European Commission stressed the urgent need to take immediate measures to confront the situation, pointing out that it has allocated 25 million euros – or about 31% of its initial allocations for Yemen for the year 2025 – to respond to this aggravating threat.
