Doctors without Borders (MSF) have warned of a sharp increase in the number of cases of acute watery diarrhea in Ibb governorate, amid a similar increase in various parts of Yemen. The organization noted that it operates the only treatment center for such cases in the Al-Qa’idah area of Dhi Sufal District, which is increasing the pressure on its medical capacity.
In this regard, MSF’s deputy head of mission in Yemen said, “The country’s health system is suffering from a near-total collapse due to years of war and instability that make access to healthcare extremely difficult for citizens.”
The organization expressed grave concern about the continued rise in cases at a time when the country is experiencing a significant decrease in humanitarian aid. This portends an imminent health disaster, especially with the approaching rainy season, which could exacerbate the spread of the disease.
Doctors without Borders (MSF) confirmed that water, sanitation, and hygiene services are insufficient to control the situation, noting that it has treated more than 1,700 patients over the past two months, with most suffering from varying degrees of dehydration. This has forced it to increase the facility’s capacity to 100 beds to keep pace with the increasing numbers of patients.
