Heavy Rains Hit Aden, Worsening IDPs Plight

Humanitarian Media Center (HMC) | Special Report

The city of Aden in southern Yemen was hit by unprecedented heavy rains on Saturday, causing torrential flooding that inundated residential neighborhoods and main streets, and severely damaged IDPs’ camps. This was accompanied by warnings issued by meteorologists of the continuation of a strong depression on Aden and neighboring regions in the coming hours.

Local sources told Humanitarian Media Center that the heavy rains significantly raised water levels in numerous residential areas, and Meteorological centers have issued alerts, forecasting continued rainfall accompanied by strong winds and thunderstorms.

A Tragedy in the Camps

Displaced people, who had fled conflict zones in search of safety, were among the hardest hit by the rains. “Ammar bin Yasser” camp in Dar Saad District suffered extensive damage as floodwaters swept into tents, submerging hundreds of families, most of them already live in dire conditions.

The camp, home to around 500 families (over 3,000 people), was transformed within hours into pools of stagnant water, causing significant damage to food, mattresses, and essential needs. .

Camp organizers warned that the continued presence of stagnant water poses serious health and environmental risks, especially in the absence of drainage systems or emergency services. They stressed the urgent need for humanitarian intervention, including the provision of shelter, food, emergency supplies, and other essential aid.

As these natural disasters continue to recur, Aden residents, especially the displaced, face a tragic reality, exacerbating suffering as a result of the absence of emergency plans and urgent response.

Urgent Calls for Intervention

In response to this catastrophic situation, local organizations and humanitarian activists have issued urgent appeals, calling on local authorities and international organizations to swiftly intervene. Their demands include draining the floodwaters from affected camps and neighborhoods, and providing emergency aid to those impacted, especially displaced families who lack the resources to cope with such disasters.
